The Importance of HBCUs

Hey everyone! Let’s talk about HBCUs.

Did you know that HBCUs have been crucial in providing quality education to Black students for over 150 years? They were established during a time when access to education was limited, and they continue to empower students today

HBCUs have produced 40% of Black doctors, 50% of Black engineers and lawyers, and an incredible 80% of Black judges in the U.S.! That’s a huge impact on our communities.

Some notable HBCU alumni include actor Samuel L. Jackson, actress Taraji P. Henson, and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Some of the most prominent HBCUs include Howard University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College. Each of these institutions is known for excellence in education and nurturing future leaders.

Attending an HBCU means being part of a vibrant community that celebrates culture and heritage while preparing students for success. Plus, it’s about building lifelong friendships and networks that can open so many doors!

So, whether you’re a student, a parent, or just curious, consider the incredible legacy and opportunities that HBCUs provide. Let’s support and uplift these institutions!

Welcome to Smart Brown Girl

This is a space for truth-telling.

Here, we uncover the stories they tried to erase, the histories left out of classrooms, buried in archives, or dismissed as “too uncomfortable.” From COINTELPRO to Fort Mose, from the Black Panther Party to today’s fights over book bans, Smart Brown Girl connects the past to the present so we can see clearly what we’re still up against.

What you’ll find here:

  • ✍🏾 Unfiltered history and analysis that refuses the sanitized version

  • 📚 Guides, resources, and teaching tools you can use in classrooms, book clubs, or community spaces

  • 🗣 Reflections and calls to action that remind us the past isn’t past, and erasure is never accidental

This blog is about more than history. It’s about memory, resistance, and survival.

Thank you for being here. Read, share, question, and carry these stories forward. Together, we disrupt the silence.
