Reflections on the Election

As I've taken the time to reflect on the results of this election, it has felt increasingly personal to me. With the exception of the last three elections, where I would vote and then move on without a sense of uncertainty, this time is different. I resonate with Kamala because, as a Black woman, I understand firsthand that no matter how much education or how many qualifications you have, you can still find yourself overshadowed by someone who is far less qualified simply because they aren’t a black women. For us, mediocrity is not an option.

I always remind my daughters that if they do something, they need to do it 100%—you can’t half-step. This election has reinforced a belief I've long held: that we have to be ten times better,  while recognizing that even that might not be enough.

Welcome to Smart Brown Girl

This is a space for truth-telling.

Here, we uncover the stories they tried to erase, the histories left out of classrooms, buried in archives, or dismissed as “too uncomfortable.” From COINTELPRO to Fort Mose, from the Black Panther Party to today’s fights over book bans, Smart Brown Girl connects the past to the present so we can see clearly what we’re still up against.

What you’ll find here:

  • ✍🏾 Unfiltered history and analysis that refuses the sanitized version

  • 📚 Guides, resources, and teaching tools you can use in classrooms, book clubs, or community spaces

  • 🗣 Reflections and calls to action that remind us the past isn’t past, and erasure is never accidental

This blog is about more than history. It’s about memory, resistance, and survival.

Thank you for being here. Read, share, question, and carry these stories forward. Together, we disrupt the silence.
