The Architects Era VI | Civil Rights & Black Power Curriculum Bundle

What happens after a movement wins a legal right? Who decides whether that right can be exercised, and what can communities do when the institutions responsible for enforcing it resist change?

The Architects Era VI: Civil Rights and Beyond is a digital African American history curriculum for high school and introductory college study. The bundle pairs a Student Workbook containing Workbooks 11 and 12 with a companion Educator’s Guide. Together, they follow the Black freedom struggle from campaigns against segregation and political exclusion to efforts to build lasting community and institutional power.

Student Workbook

Workbook 11 · The Right to Resist Students compare litigation, boycotts, sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and voter registration campaigns. They examine how grassroots organizers used economic pressure, why activists confronting the same system chose different tactics, and what happened when legal victories met resistance from the institutions charged with carrying them out.

Workbook 12 · The Black Power Years Students explore how cultural pride, electoral organizing, and community programs became ways to build power. They study the Black Panther Party alongside other approaches to Black Power, including international solidarity, and examine how government responses shaped the movement. A central question runs through the workbook: What changes when communities can shape how institutions operate or build institutions of their own?

Educator’s Guide

The companion guide suggests a flexible 4–6 week sequence for the full Era VI unit. It includes learning objectives, key people and vocabulary, and teaching notes. Educators can use its facilitation guidance for primary-source analysis, discussion, writing, and projects, then choose from assessment options and rubrics that fit their learners.

The guide asks students to support their conclusions with evidence, distinguish a tactic from the philosophy behind it, and explain why the same legal victory could produce different results on the ground.

Who it’s for
