Introduce children to the young people who helped change history.

The Little Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement Bundle from Smart Brown Girl introduces students to Ruby Bridges, Claudette Colvin, and the young participants in the Children’s Crusade. Through storytelling and creative activities, children learn how these young people challenged segregation and how families and communities supported their actions.

Designed for Grades 1–4, this digital bundle includes a student workbook and three coloring pages. Reflection prompts give children room to ask questions, consider the experiences of young activists, and express what they’re learning.

What’s included

Student Workbook

Stories, reflection prompts, and creative activities introduce young civil rights activists and encourage students to explore their experiences.

Three Coloring Pages

  • Ruby Bridges walking to school.

  • Claudette Colvin on the bus.

  • A Children’s Crusade protest scene.

The coloring pages give students another way to revisit the people and events explored in the workbook.

What children will learn

Students explore what segregation meant and how children and teenagers participated in the struggle to challenge it. They consider the choices young activists faced, including the risks of speaking up and the importance of community support.

Writing and art activities help learners explain their understanding and reflect on questions about fairness and responsibility. Families and educators can use the reflection prompts to support thoughtful conversations.

Ways to use this bundle

Bring these resources into elementary social studies lessons, Black History Month activities, homeschool instruction, or family learning. Work through the workbook together or select activities to complement an existing civil rights unit.
